Confucius Institute Scholarship

Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) sets up the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, also known as the Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS), for the purpose of supporting Confucius institutes, cultivating qualified international Chinese language teachers and promoting Chinese language and culture in other countries.

Recommending institutions, including Confucius institutes, Confucius classrooms, approved HSK test centers, Chinese language/education departments of overseas universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction of other countries and Chinese embassies/consulates can recommend outstanding students and Chinese language teachers to study in prescribed programs in host institutions.

China University of Petroleum (East China) is one of the entrusted host institutions by Hanban.

 

Eligibility

All applicants shall be:

1. Non-Chinese citizens;

2. In good physical and mental conditions, and with good academic performance and conduct;

3. Committed to the Chinese language education and related work;

4. Between the ages of 16 and 35 (as of September 1stof each year of application). Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not be over 45.

5. Students currently studying in China are not eligible to apply one-academic-year studies.

Students currently studying or studied in China are not eligible to apply four-week or one-semester studies.

Note:

  • Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)is a 3-year program.Priority will be given to applicants providing a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

  • Priority will be given toone-academic-year Chinese Language study applicants who have passed HSKK.

     

    Scholarship Coverage

    The scholarship provides full coverage of tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

Tuition

Tuition fee does not cover the textbook expenses and tourist tickets.

Accommodation fee

Free on-campus living - double room

Off-campus living subsidy: CNY 700/month

Living allowance

One-academic-year & one-semester students: CNY 2,500/month

MTCSOL students: CNY 3,000 /month

Comprehensive medical insurance

Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by UPC in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the MOE.

Four-week study: CNY 160

One-semester study: CNY 400

One-Semester Study/MTCSOL:CNY 800/year

Notes:

  • Students are required to complete enrollment procedures for every semester within stipulated period; otherwise, their scholarship may be cancelled. Students who are enrolled before the 15th(or on the 15th) of the month are entitled to the full allowance of that month while those enrolled after the 15th of that month are only entitled to half of the amount.

  • During the study period, for any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance during absence will be suspended.

  • For students who suspend study or drop out of school for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment by the host institutions, allowance will be terminated on the date of such suspension, dropping out or when the decision of such punishment is announced.

  • The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by host institutions.

 

Application Documents

  1. A scanned copy of passport photo page;

  2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity);

  3. A reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions;

  4. A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript;

  5. Applicants graduated over 12 months should provide an employment certificate or non-criminal record.

  6. MTCSOL applicants should provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors and astudy plan with a minimum of 800 words.

  7. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers should provide proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employer.

  8. Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.

    Application Procedures

  9. Log on the Confucius Institute Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn), make an online application and search for recommending institutions and the host institution (China University of Petroleum).

  10. Upload application materials online and track the application progress, comments and result.

  11. Scholarship holders need to confirm with China University of Petroleum for admission materials, print out the scholarship certificate from their online account.

  12. Register at China University of Petroleum on the designated date on the admission notice.
