3. Preparatory Education

These regulations are stipulated according to "Notice about Developing Preparatory Education for International Undergraduate Students, Who Obtain a Scholarship from Chinese Government "(Ministry of Education, March 2009) , in combination with the actual situation of foreign students to ensure the training quality and help foreign students adapt to majors education in our university.

1. Management

College of International Education is responsible for management and other specific matters related to preparatory education, organizing curriculum syllabus of preparatory education, preparing teaching materials and teaching reference books, and gradually establishing an evaluation system to assess students’ academic performance.

2. Target students

College of International Education will run an entracnce test. The students who fail to meet the standard must attend preparatory education. Examination subjects and standards are listed in Appendix 1.

3. Training Objectives

Preparatory Education is initialized to make sure that students could reach the basic standards of higher education in the aspects of Chinese language, and other related professional knowledge and abilities. After the completion of preparatory education, students are expected to obtain the following knowledge and abilities:

(1). Chinese-teaching students should HSK Level 4. They will be able to use Chinese fluently in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

(2). English-teaching students will be able to use English fluently in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

(3). Possess the necessary professional knowledge: majoring in science and engineering, students should master the required professional knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry and other knowledge; majoring in economics, law, management and education, students should master mathematics , which is required for professional learning.

4. Duration of Study, Curriculum and Teaching Mode

(1) Duration of Study

Generally, duration of study is one semester (six months). For the students who could not reach the standard for professional knowledge learning, the duration of study must be extended, but no more than one year.

(2) Curriculum and Teaching Mode

Language teaching, together with expertise teaching will be implemented in an intensive way.

The courses of preparatory education include Chinese language, basic courses and English. Among them, Chinese language courses include ordinary Chinese and technological Chinese; fundamental courses include mathematics, chemistry, and physics, etc.

Preparatory education for one semester is no less than 300 hours. Prescribed teaching hours of each subject as follows:

5. Assessment

At the end of preparatory education, students could continue the major course study only by passing all of the examinations. Otherwise, they have to study the preparatory courses for the second time. If students again failed the examinations after one-year preparatory education, the University would cancel their admission qualification. The subjects and standards of assessment are the same with entrance examination.

Appendix I

The Examination Subjects and Standards for International Undergraduate Students in China University of Petroleum (East China)

1. Subjects of Entrance Examination

Subjects of entrance examination for science and engineering: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English (English-teaching majors), Chinese (Chinese-teaching majors).

Subjects of entrance examination for economics and management: Mathematics, English (English-teaching majors), Chinese (Chinese-teaching majors).

Subjects of entrance examination for literature, history, philosophy: English (English-teaching majors), Chinese (Chinese-teaching majors).

2. Criteria of Assessment

The total score for science and engineering should be no less then 280 points, for language subjects no less then 70 points, the lowest score of single subject no less than 50 points.

The total score for economics and management should be no less than 150, for language subjects no less then 70 points, the lowest score of single subject no less than 50 points.

The score for literature, history, philosophy: language scores should be no less than 85 points.

3. Exemption Conditions

The following students may apply for exemption of related subjects:

Students with unconditional offer from China University of Petroleum (East China) could apply for the professional learning directly.

(1) With HSK-4 certificate, Chinese-teaching students could apply for exemption of Chinese.

(2) With TOEFL above 60 points or IELTS above score 5.0, English-teaching students could apply for exemption of English.
