Interim Regulations for the Foundation Studies

To ensure education quality, and to help students adapt to the professional education in UPC, foundation education is implemented according to the policy of “On the Foundation Education for Chinese Government Scholarship Undergraduate Students” and “Interim Specification of High Education Quality for International Education” formulated by Ministry of Education.

1. Management

The College of International Education is responsible for the management of foundation education, organizing the formulation of foundation education curriculum syllabus, organizing the selection and compilation of foundation textbooks and teaching reference books, and establishing the assessment criteria for the students' academic performance.

2. Target candidates for foundation study

The College of International Education organizes entrance examinations for new students. Students who do not meet the admission standards are required to do foundation study. The subjects of the entrance examination and the passing criteria are shown in Appendix 1.

3. Education objectives

The main purpose of the foundation study is to enable students to achieve the admission standards to do bachelor degree in UPC, including the required language level and professional background. Upon completion of the foundation education, students should obtain the following knowledge and abilities:

1) Students, who apply for Chinese-medium programs, should pass HSK level 4, and be proficient in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese.

2) Students, who apply for English-medium program, should be proficient in English listening, speaking, reading and writing.

3) Students should have certain professional knowledge. Students, who apply for science, engineering programs, should have enough knowledge on mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Students, who apply for law, management, and other programs, should have enough mathematical knowledge required for professional study.

4. Duration of study, curriculum nad teaching mode.

1) Study period

The term of study is one semester (half a year). For the students who still do not meet the admission standards after the foundation study can apply for one more semester of foundation study, with the longest duration no more than one year.

2) Course setting and teaching mode

Adopting the method of intensive education, insisting on the combination of language teaching and professional knowledge teaching.

Foundation courses include language and foundation courses. Among them, the language courses are divided into Chinese and English.

No less than 240 teaching hours are included in foundation education.

5. Evaluation

Students can do the degree program only when pass the evaluation after the foundation study ends. If students fail in the exam, they need to repeat the foundation study. Students will have to quit if they cannot pass the evaluation after one-year of foundation study.


Appendix 1

Entrance Exams and Passing Criteria

1. Examination subjects

The entrance examination subjects for science and engineering programs include: mathematics, physics, chemistry, English (for English-medium programs), Chinese (for Chinese-medium programs).

The examination subjects for economics and management programs include mathematics, English (for English-medium programs), Chinese (for Chinese-medium programs).

The examination subjects for literature, history, philosophy programs: English (for English-medium programs), Chinese (for Chinese-medium programs).

2. Passing criteria

The total score of entrance examination for science and engineering programs should not be lower than 280, the score of language subject should not be lower than 70, and the minimum score of other single subject should not be lower than 60.

The total score of entrance examination for economics and management programs should not be less than 150, the minimum score of language subject should not be less than 70, and the minimum score of single subject should not be less than 60.

The language score of entrance examination for literature, history, philosophy programs should be no less than 85.

All the scores are based on percentage.

3. Exemption cases

Those who apply for Chinese-medium programs, and have the certificate of HSK level 4 or above, may apply for exemption of Chinese test. Applicants with a TOEFL score of 60 or above, or an IELTS score of 5.0 or above, may apply for English test exemption.
